I’ve had the pleasure of interviewing the Co-Founders Anna Bunina and Daria Mura of Fancy Kids, “a London based concept store offering organic and stylish clothing & products around the world”
Please tell us a bit about your business?
Fancy Kids is an online shop for children from 0-10 years old. We have launched our website on 14of May 2015. Fancy Kids has a strong concept behind the brand, which is organic, stylish, innovative and independent. Those four words ideally describe what lies behind the story of Fancy Kids. We came up with this idea when we realised that majority of our friends, who have children, struggle to find affordable and high quality products. It’s either very expensive luxury brands, or mass market. That is when we saw the gap in the market and decided to introduce high quality products from independent designers for the affordable prices. We represent brands from all over the world such as Italy, France, the Netherlands, Sweden, Georgia, South Korea, Japan, USA and so on. It is important to mention that from the beginning we started working with Charity organisation called Plece2Be. This incredible people work with children at schools who are emotionally unstable due to family issues. Fancy Kids donate 1£ from each online purchase.
What is your main inspiration to be an entrepreneur?
We believe that being an entrepreneur is an extremely interesting and exciting role in life. In spite of that entrepreneurship path can be very difficult, especially in the beginning. However we meet daily challenges with enthusiasm and desire to find the best possible solution for solving problems. Both of us have passion to develop a successful company, that it will always be in continuous development as a business as well as in the social sphere. The main inspiration is to follow paths of our beloved parents, who are in business and achieved high results. We are keen to accomplish their standards and try extremely hard to go further and be able to support them and to see them being proud of ourselves.
What would you say is your greatest professional accomplishment?
We are working on this project for less than one year, and we believe that till now we achieved good results in such a short time period. However there is a lot to work on when it comes to developing the business and ourselves. If to state the greatest accomplishment, we do believe that our concept is very strong, and that for now every single aspect of Fancy Kids follows that concept exactly: stylish, organic, innovative and independent.
What are the challenges you face of being a Woman in the Business?
The answer to this question can be found in the question itself: woman in the business. There are times when we feel that some people can take us (not only us, but women overall) not as seriously as we should be taken, and business environment can be used as an opportunity to mislead women. However this challenge can be overcome: time and the way of doing business always shows who is serious, and who can be mislead.
What are the rewards?
We believe that the main reward is the inner satisfaction and pride from close people who surround us. As we do face a huge number of problems every day, it is very fascinating to find solutions and deal with them in the smartest way.
What is the best advice you’ve received?
We have been given enormous amount of advice since we started, and we appreciate every single one of them. However truly, the best advice is experience. Only from experience we can learn and improve, in order to become better, smarter, more efficient and productive.
Who is your biggest role model in the business world and why?
We adore a lot of entrepreneurs and business people, who achieved unbelievable results and are truly being an inspiration for us. One of the role models is Natalie Massenet, founder of Net-A-Porter. We admire what an empire she built and how. As well as we aim to become Net-A-Porter type of online shop, but for kids. When reading about her achievements, we realised that she has been through so many ups and downs and she definitely faced all upcoming problems and managed to bring the company to the highest standards, since Net-A-Porter is considered to be main online destination for luxury women clothing.
What advice would you give to women who want to start a business?
Not to be scared – that is the advice. We have met a lot of women who have huge potentials, however fear to invest and bring the idea to life. There is nothing scary to start up your own business, obviously responsibilities are huge and decision-making is always hard, but if to work really hard and be careful with financial aspect of the business, there is always a reward.
What mistakes have you made along the way and learned from?
Most mistakes are affecting the financial side of the business. We would say that getting to know how to avoid unnecessary expenses are the biggest issue of any
business, including ours. And of course throughout this year we concluded that we have to try as hard as possible to allocate budgets in the smartest way.
What’s your way forward of expansion?
We have countless number of aims to achieve in the future, as well as introduce many more new projects within Fancy Kids brand. First step is to plan and to introduce our own collection for babies, which hopefully will happen very soon! Also we have started our own blog, www.fancykidsblog.com,where we write about many important aspects of modern parenting, interviews with interesting people, provide tips about where the best children friendly spots in London can be found and so on.
What’s your secret to success?
Our secret is to always believe in ourselves. It can get hard at times, as there are many obstacles on our way. But, no matter what happens there is always a solution, and we believe that whatever happens, happens for a reason.
What do you do to unwind & relax?
We consider that the best relaxation is to travel, spend time with our families and friends and sometimes even to have some time on your own for a while, with a good book and a warm cup of tea.
Tell us something no one knows about you?
It is very difficult to say, as both of us are very sociable and quite open people. We honestly cannot think about one single thing to mention.
Finally take me through a day in your life?
Our weekday can sound very tedious for some but for us is time full of adventures and new things. Anna always come to the office the earliest, Daria arrives later. We try to hold meeting with our team, to follow up and always be consistent with upcoming task, events and plans. Normally after the meeting we go back to each of our tasks, and in the meantime every day something new, that we have to deal with, comes up! After work hours, we like to go somewhere nice to eat. Afterwards it’s home time, and then all over again the next day.☺
